Change Management
What is Change Management?
Change Management is not an end in itself but a means to achieve strategic goals, to strengthen leadership skills, to align behaviors and often all of these at the same time. Change Management is about the process of moving an individual, a group, a team, or an organization from its present state to a new level of performance in the future. Since change is inevitable, constant and accelerating, organizations that don’t prepare to manage change faster and more effectively are at risk of losing competitiveness or even of becoming obsolete. The future belongs to those who have the vision and the tools to embrace such a change process in a pro-active fashion.
Compelling reasons for organizational change include:
- New product development
- Changing customer patterns (ageing population, intercultural diversity)
- New performance management systems
- Mergers and acquisitions
- Technical innovation (e.g. new IT systems)
- Impact of globalization
- Range from maintaining competitive stance to change in order to survive
The impact of change can be dramatic:
- Organization thrown into instability
- Objectives and outcomes often ambiguous
- Resistance to part with processes, behaviors, and assumptions
- Danger of lowered productivity
|
|
Implications for employees:
- Learn to tolerate ambiguity
- Acquire new skills and competencies
- Manage resistance constructively
- Develop innovative approaches to problems
- Take controlled risks, and encourage that in others
- View of change depends on perceived outcomes (such as benefit for the individual) and perceived ability to predict or control it
